Tembe Elephant National Park

Tembe Elephant Park, lies on the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique. It was established in 1983 to protect elephants which used to migrate between Maputaland and southern Mozambique. The park lies deep in an area of sand forests, pans and wetlands in northern Tongaland, and the diversity of birdlife is spectacular.

The park is situated within the sand veld ecological zone and consists mainly of closed woodland and secondary thicket formation. The zone falls within a transition area between tropical and sub-tropical forms and therefore is home to a great diversity of vegetation.

Although Tembe is a national park, only ten vehicles are allowed into the park on a daily basis and these must be 4X4s to negotiate the sand tracks that form the road network. This offers the visitor a true taste of the wild with very little interupted game viewing.

The Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area is planned to link the Maputo Elephant Reserve in Mozambique, Tembe Elephant park in South Africa and the Lubombo Conservancy in Swaziland in a single transfrontier reserve.
